WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

The courses below are listed in order of difficulty. If you have any question about your qualifications to take a class, please contact Roger or the facility where the class is offered.

"Expanding the Glass Palette"
More advanced kiln-forming techniques from this world renowned glass artist. A palette-expanding course which covers:

  • Creating complexity with sheet glass;
  • Frit, confetti, stringers, enamels, and other non-sheet glass products;
  • Fusing with non-glass materials, including metals (silver, gold and others) micas and more.

Students will see and re-create lots of technique samples. A good knowledge of basic fusing is required. This class is a must for any fusing enthusiast. Don't miss it.

"The Shiny Class: Metals & Mica in Glass Media"

Another palette-expanding course.Ê This class takes an intensive approach to the variety of non-glass materials that can be used in fusing.Ê Some permanent markers, fiberglass, paper, wire, minerals, and small animal skeletons may all be successfully combined with fused glass using principles and guidelines laid down in this class.Ê Discussion includes establishing the similarities between iridescent, dichroic and mica surfaces and their relationship to fusing glass.Ê A special focus is given to mica and its application to glass.Ê Metals available in leaf will be explored as well as techniques for foil in gold, silver and copper.Ê

"Images in Glass"
This course focuses on design and process for landscape in fused glass, as Roger Thomas shares his techniques and philosophy of his Glass Paintings. Roger is known to students of glass for his varied and unusual glass fusing techniques with which he creates his art. During this class the student will complete four landscape samples, as Roger discusses and demonstrates how he creates color, depth and translucency in his work.

"The Projects Class"
Roger Thomas is a world renowned glass artist whose techniques and style are instantly recognizable. Now he is going to share his experience and unique vision to help you cultivate your own personal artwork. In this class, students will benefit from group discussions and critiques as they each work to create original art pieces. From conceptualization and design to business practices and marketing, this is an exciting opportunity to develop your style and receive peer feedback under the guidance of an extremely talented professional artist. Previous advanced fusing experience is a prerequisite, and the "Expanding the Glass Palette" class is recommended.

"Thinking Painting, Using Fusing"

In this class Roger Thomas shares his technique for designing and rendering landscapes in fused glass. The student will make samples of different techniques for landscapes, each illustrating styles Roger uses in his own studio. In addition the student will create a larger landscape project using techniques they will develop during the class. This is an ideal class for the accomplished fuser looking to expand into a more pictorial medium as well as the accomplished painter or draughtsman wishing to expand into fused glass. The prerequisites are either good fusing skills or good painting skills combined with basic fusing experience.
